I’m in the middle of reading another middle-grade historical fiction set during WWII, which is kind of intense. So took a break for lighter fare. I didn’t realize there was a new Phoebe and Her Unicorn book out until I saw it browsing the shelves, but should have guessed- it’s a continually ongoing webcomic.
This volume has a lot going on with friendships. Phoebe feels awkward about the type of attention she receives from a “cool” girl at school she wants to impress. She tries to help Dakota repair her own fall in popularity, due to being Phoebe’s friend (or so she claims)! She has to debate against her friend Max in class, but is completely thrown off when he takes a different stance than she expected, and none of the arguments she’d prepared work for that situation. Phoebe and Marigold write their own comics about themselves (but they’re rather boring). Phoebe admits she has a crush on the non-binary unicorn Ferny, but is afraid that if she tells them, it will get all awkward. Marigold makes up a story about why swiss cheese has holes in it- and it has to do with unicorn horns. The unicorn goes to therapy, and Phoebe frets about if she is being discussed, but of course she’ll never know because that’s private. She reconnects with an old friend, whom she hasn’t seen in hundreds of years- unicorns live a long time- and Phoebe feels left out for a while, but talks that over with Max, who reassures her. There’s lots of little cute and funny and ironic moments too, which made me smile and laugh a bit. Just what I needed.
Borrowed from the public library.
