This book starts with a pages-long argument, and that almost put me off reading it. Between the main character’s father, who owns the ranch they live on, and her grandfather- who has far more experience ranching and is very opinionated about how things should be done. Janey overhears that they are planning to sell some of the livestock, including an unbroken colt that Janey has been wanting for her own. She’s been forbidden to work with the colt, especially because its sire was wild and unmanageable. Janey is convinced she can secretly train the colt to lead, and show her elders that it’s worth keeping. But her enthusiasm far outweighs her experience. She can’t handle the cold very well at all, and when she tries, gets injured (lucky to just have a bruised face and swollen lip). Then the ranch hires a new hand- a Cheyenne man who brings his family to live in the bunkhouse- which causes more friction between the men, as her grandfather is prejudiced against Native Americans. Janey knows the Cheyenne boy from school and enlists his help with the colt, but he immediately realizes that it’s dangerously untamed. Tells her to give up. I liked that this story didn’t sugar-coat things. Nothing was easy for Janey. At home she’s trying to stand up to what she thinks is unfair treatment from her grandfather, feeling jealous that her younger brother gets to do things that used to be her special jobs, and then outside her work with the colt is going badly, and proving to be a great risk. But then circumstances throw the colt into an unsafe situation, and if Janey saves him, the experience might just have garnered his trust in humans. Also, there’s an owl the kids frequently see and admire in the woods (Janey prevents her visiting uncle from shooting it)- hence the title.
